KD5 Ch3 Linky Party

I am getting excited to start D5..what about you?! I am thinking of how I can set up my room. I try to "physically" stay away from school in June. So, I will be ready to go up in the next couple of weeks. I promise I will take pictures!

First up, your gathering place. I still haven't come up with a cute name for my gathering place! Uggg! What about you?

Good fit books I love the shoe lesson that the sisters talk about in their book. I have also seen some great lessons using Goldilocks and The Three Bears....which I love because I use that book at the very beginning of the year to introduce several comprehension concepts! There are so many Goldilocks books that you can use!!

This fun version is perfect for an I PICK lesson!

Here are some cute puppets to use too!!

I created this FREE  pack to go along with this!! Click the pink title page below to download your copy! There is a poster for each I PICK AND....I made a poster for too hard books, too easy, and just right books!

I also have some Comprehension sets that I use (with Goldilocks theme) available!
This packet includes:
Posters: author, illustrator, character,
setting, plot, and sequence of events
4 different station response sheets

This packet includes:
Posters: cause and effect, classify and categorize, compare and contrast, draw conclusions, main idea and details, and realism and fantasy

Anchor charts- I am struggling with space on this. We have a fire marshall...although, I have never actually "seen" him, I think he is real! :-) We are not to have more than 20% of our wall space covered with paper. I have been looking for ideas on how to store these and make them visible! I want the kids to be able to use what we create! I would love to hear your ideas!

Book Boxes- I am so excited about my new book boxes!! I bought these from Really Good Stuff.
I made some super cute book box labels to go with my color scheme this year. Click on the title page below to go to my TpT store. These match the FREE name tags, desk plates, and cubby tags that I shared earlier. :-)

Calm signals and check in procedures- I bought the cutest chimey thingy majigs!
As far as check in procedures...I love the sisters' idea with the thumb in front of their heart! I am wondering if there is a way that I can have them check in with me and everyone NOT see what they are doing. I know that we would talk about it...not mattering what others do, or how they feel they did during D5 time....hmmm?! I will be thinking more on this one!

Holy schnikey....LONG POST! If you are still with me, then you get a cupcake!! :-)
Now, for the link up! I can't wait to read your posts! Ready....Set....Go!!

Guest Post by Fern Smith

Using a Blog for Individual Student Web Pages
I have finally tweaked my "student work" website/blog where I want it!
I am using this separate blog address Mrs. Smith's Classroom to be a place where my students and their family & friends can come to see their work & class photos. It stays separate from my blog spot, Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas, but I also have parents who follow me there too!
Once the parents and students get to the classroom blog, I use the "labels" feature to put their initials with each post.
So if it is a picture of two girls, I put both of their initials in the "labels" for that post.
If it is a story they've written, it will only have one set of initials.

Then using the labels gadget in the Design Page, I
can have a link to the page with each of their labels!
The Internet sees this as a page displaying all of the posts containing each label, but to the Internet User, it looks like a page designed for just that child! So when they click on KP, they will see there son, K***n's work and pictures!
They ♥love♥ it!

MB's "Web Page" with all her links and pictures!
I also have a letter I send home explaining my policy to the parents and getting parental permission to use their child's work & photo, the parents ♥love♥ it too!

I'm currently the 3rd grade team leader, Teacher of the Year and blog addict!
I love new followers, come check out my blog and see what you think!

KD5 Chapter 3 Things to think about

I hope that you are enjoying this book study as much as I am! I have found some new blogs to follow! I love reading posts from experienced KD5 teachers AND hearing the same concerns from the "ready to try KD5."

Things to think about while reading chapter 3:
1. Establish a gathering place for brain and body breaks. (Do you call your gathering place anything special? A few of my teammates did. Annie called hers the "Family Room" and Kim calls hers the "Learning Space." I need to come up with something better than "the carpet" lol!)
2. Developing the concept of "good fit" books (There are LOTS of examples of different good fit lessons in blogland AND Pinterest)
3. Create anchor charts with students How will these be visual in the room? Where will you store them? What about small spaces?
4. Short, repeated intervals of independent practice and setting up book boxes (How are you going to keep track of stamina? What will you use for book boxes? What are you going to put in those book boxes on the 1st day of school?)
5. Calm Signals and check in procedures (Do you already have a signal? How will you handle check ins?)
6. Using the correct model/incorrect model approach for demonstrating appropriate behaviors. (Will you keep track of inappropriate behaviors? If they are not doing what is expected, then they are calling out for attention...what other ways can you give them some extra attention so that they can be more independent during D5?)

I will be back on Wednesday ready to link up! I have LOTS to share that day!! :-) Make sure you come back and have your post ready!

Back To School With Brown Bear

I love beginning the school year with Brown Bear! It's a great unit for working on color recognition and color words! I have created this literacy unit to go along with the story. I do have a few FREEIBES that I will be posting this weekend to go along with it too. :-) Here is the first FREEBIE! Click the page to download your copy. If you have a literacy freebie that you would like to see...then leave a comment. I will see what I can do.
I am working on a Math unit AND a super-dee-duper special fun unit to go along with this book! You won't want to miss it!! Ohhhh the suspense! LOL! :-)

I am sure you have the book already, but just in case you do not. You can get your copy here:

KD5 Chapter 2 Linky

Well folks here is my Freebie for the week. I really debated about putting it up. I feel bad that some of you have paid for this, but had to take it down because of copyright blah blah blah. I have changed it a tad bit...just for the simple fact if you did pay for it, then you are still getting something for free too.  This set includes: Daily 5 posters, Daily 5 rotation cards, and CAFE posters. I will probably add more to go with this later :-)

TRUST:
They used a new driver analogy here! I can SOOOOO relate. Daughter number 2, who will be 16 in less than a month, but THINKS she is 30...is a new driver! I would love to say that I am the trusting passenger that sits back and enjoys the ride. Ummmm....NO! I swear there is a real brake on the passenger side while she is driving. LOL! Just had to share!

So, I need to ask the same questions posed on page 19...
1. What am I doing now that I could trust the kids to do?
2. In what ways could I trust children where I haven't before?

I will use this sheet to write down my daily routines/schedule and look at what I am doing now! I will then jot some ideas of how I can trust my Kidners to do those things. I can do it, right?! If they took too many snacks...who cares! I do NOT need to be the po-po on everything. You can click on the preview below to download your copy.
 CHOICE:
I love choice! Do you love choice? Who does NOT love choice?! I have such a difficult time reading something that I am told that I have to read. Am I alone here? I put it off until the last minute, I am chatting with my teammates about how ridiculous it is that I am being made to read something
Children love structure and routine...amen 2 sisters! Some things to think about while reading this chapter...Do I have my schedule/routine posted in the room? Is it posted and then we don't talk about it, or do I go over each day at morning meeting?

COMMUNITY:
Providing members  with ownership to hold others accountable for:
1 Behaviors of effort
2 Learning
3 Order
4 Kindness
Things to think about for me...What does "accountable" mean for my Kinders?! We will need to practice ways that are appropriate and no bossy flossies!

SENSE OF URGENCY:
Ohhhh boy...so guilty of "Because I said so!" Does this make me a bad teacher? I really don't think so. I think that I am really good about "talking about the why," but do I continue to talk about? Do I revisit it when it is natural/makes sense?!
Things to think about for me...come up with "why" for each component of D5. Are there good read alouds to go along with these (HEY! D5 team, add this to your list of things to do...come up with great read alouds that can align with this). You can click on the preview to download this. I know...I know...I KNOW...I have a problem with borders! Heaven forbid I use something that is just plain paper...GASP!?!?
STAMINA:
Hey Gail, I was determined to get back in shape after daughter number...she's 8...still determined though! Tee Hee!! :-) All I need to think about here...bring on the stamina baby! :-)

STAY OUT OF THE WAY: I called this Independence! I am so excited to be able to work with students individually and uninterrupted! Is this possible!? I really believe so! What tricks or visuals do you use when working with small groups or students? I have heard some teachers wear a hat, or a special lamp that is turned on. I would love to hear your cute ideas.

Head on over to Caitlin's blog to link up!

KD5 Chapter 2

Before I begin with my "things to think about" while reading Chapter 2, let me answer a few questions. The Daily 5 and CAFE are copyrighted and trademarked materials. The things that I provide are an unofficial adaptation of the Daily 5 by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. They are in no way endorsed by the 2 Sisters. Whew...long schppel there!

Anyhoooo....I had 3 D5/CAFE items in my TpT store, which several of you had already purchased (thank you!) I had to take them down because it is a copyright violation...darn it! The 2 Sisters have a site that you can join, www.thedailycafe.com, and it has some printable items that you can use on there. My problem is..well how can I put this nicely...it's not cute. We want cute, right?! I also wanted a picture to go with each poster. Sooooo, here are the rules (I THINK!) I can not sell D5/CAFE items, but I can give it away for free. Here is where I am having a problem...all of you wonderful teachers that have already paid for those items....is that really fair for me to now offer them to everyone for FREE?! There is no way for me to go back and see WHO bought those items. It would be nearly impossible. I am trying to come up with the best solution for all.  I have actually rec'd a few emails from the sisters...cool right?! They know that teachers out there want CUTE and useful resources. So, hopefully their fabulous team is working on that RIGHT NOW! Come on team...work on that...would ya?! LOL! I wasn't really sure what to expect when I emailed them. They responded (very quickly I might add) very nicely! It was like talking to a teammie! So appreciative of the collaboration that we are doing...way to go chicas....and that Kinder teachers have the "WE CAN DO IT!" (total water boy moment there) ATTITUDE!

I rarely create something solely to sell on TpT or TN. I love to create, to blog, and to chat with my new teacher/bloggin' buddies. This book study was never about making money for me. I love the fact that there are so many teachers from all over the US that want to work together and share ideas! There truly is not another profession like ours! You all are awesome!

I made this cute little poster to go with Chapter 2! I just changed "Stay Out of the Way" to "Independence" :-)

Daily 5 Chapter 1 Linky

First, le me say thank you for all of your kind comments and emails! I am glad that so many K teachers are excited about this book study. Here is my reflection on this chapter: (See charts on pages 7-9 in the book)

1. How do I teach new behaviors?
Ok, I know that all teachers are exhausted the first few weeks of school. We have so much to go over! Now, my K teacher friends, do you ever feel like you are herding cats the first few weeks...for real?! LOL! I come home some days almost completely hoarse. I talk sooooo much! Am I alone? :-) As kindergarten teachers we know how important it is to model for our kiddos.  What does it really look like for me? We come together at whole group area and we talk about it!! We role play. We talk about what things should look like. We talk about what things should sound like. We practice...practice...practice!

2. How do I teach expectations?
MODEL! PRACTICE! I am constantly reminding them of what expectations are! Even on day 175...I remind them before we leave the room what I expect in the hallway. Have you ever noticed that Kinder kids are usually the best behaved kids in the hall, at school assemblies, in the cafeteria?! It is because we are constantly reminding them of expectations. I think as students get older, some teachers feel like they should "already know" and granted....they probably should, but if you are not communicating expectations with them, then how do they know?!

3. How do I monitor student behavior? whole group? small groups? individual?
I have release some student behaviors, but really can see myself having a difficult time with this. I am a control freak! However, I love the thought of students self monitoring. I know that if I think that they can do. If I expect them to do it. They will do it. What responsible learners we will be creating! :-) I really am going to give this a go! FOR REAL!

4. What do I do when a student is not exhibiting desired behavior?
Yes, I am total middle column on this one too. I use the clip chart in my room (which I still plan on using) and kids do miss some of their recess. HOWEVER, I do not have them practice the desired behavior! WHY NOT?! We "talk" about it....there I go again...talk, talk, talk! LOL!

5. Whose classroom is it?
Does this sound terrible...it is so my classroom! I want it to be "our" classroom! I am going to look at my area....do I need that much space? I want the kids to take some ownership into their roles as my student...does that make sense?!

6. Locus of control?
I still give stickers, sweet spots, candy! Is that a terrible thing? I guess I will have to read more of the book to find out.

7. Where are supplies stored?
Right now I have separate areas of my classroom. Each Literacy Work Station has a defined area. I have already started thinking about how I will store things. I monitor supplies right now. Is that something that I need to continue to do!? I don't think so. If I teach how to take care of these things, then this will be one less thing that I need to worry about, right?

You can check out some great pins that our KD5 team has already pinned for you. It has some great things to help you get started with Daily 5!

Next up will be Caitlin from Kindergarten Smiles. She will be hosting Chapter 2. If you are not following her blog yet, then head on over right now!!!
